In the first period of the revival of the Hebrew Language the United States is called both Artsot Habberit and Hamedinot Hame'uchadot; the latter is a literal translation of the English phrase.
As for the former, it is found in Hebrew periodicals since 1861, and it became widespread probably after Mendeli Mocher Sefarim, the famous writer, began to use it.
The phrase does not necessarily bear a biblical connotation; the word Berit is used in Hebrew in completely secular contexts, such as Berit Hamo'atsot (USSR), Berit Varsha (Warsaw Pact), Berit Nato (NATO).
